Description: “Top agricultural scientists from around the world have taken up the challengeof sustainable agriculture, with the specific focus on integrating agronomic, climatological, biophysical and socio-economic perspectives and processes. Everychapter (of the Handbook) contributes to addressing the growing food-securitychallenges facing the world.”Foreword by Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at ColumbiaUniversityClimate effects on agriculture are of increasing concern in both the scientificand policy communities because of the growing population and the greateruncertainty in the weather during growing seasons. Changes in production aredirectly linked to variations in temperature and precipitation during thegrowing season and often to the offseason changes in weather because of soilwater storage to replenish the soil profile. This is not an isolated problem butone of worldwide interest because each country has concerns about their foodsecurity. The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP)was developed to evaluate agricultural models and intercompare their ability topredict climate impacts. In sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, South America andEast Asia, AgMIP regional research teams (RRTs) are conducting integratedassessments to improve understanding of agricultural impacts of climate change(including biophysical and economic impacts) at national and regional scales.Other AgMIP initiatives include global gridded modeling, data and informationtechnology (IT) tool development, simulation of crop pests and diseases,site-based crop-climate sensitivity studies, and aggregation and scaling.

Contents: Part 1: Overview of AgMIP: Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project: Phase I Activities by a Global Community of Science; Methods of Regional Integrated Assessments: AgMIP's Trans-disciplinary Approach to Regional Integrated Assessment of Climate Impact, Vulnerability, and Adaptation of Agricultural Systems; AgMIP Climate Datasets and Scenarios for Integrated Assessment; Crop Systems Modeling in AgMIP: A New Protocol-driven Approach for Regional Integrated Assessments; Representative Agricultural Pathways and Scenarios for Regional Integrated Assessment of Climate Change Impact, Vulnerability, and Adaptation; Data Interoperability Tools for Regional Integrated Assessments; Global Estimates of Climate Impacts on Agriculture: The Ag-GRID Global Gridded Crop Model Intercomparison (GGCMI); The AgMIP Coordinated Climate-Crop Modeling Project (C3MP): Methods and Protocols; Building AgMIP Science: Uncertainty in Agricultural Impact Assessment; Uncertainties in Scaling up Crop Models for Large Area Climate Change Impact Assessments; Statistical Analysis of Large Simulated Yield Datasets for Studying Climate Change Effect; Crop Diseases and Climate Change in the AgMIP Framework; Conclusion: Major Findings and Future Activities Part 2: Introduction; Sub-Saharan Africa: Perspectives on Climate Effects on Agriculture: The International Efforts of AgMIP in Sub-Saharan Africa; Climate Change Impacts on West African Agriculture: An Integrated Regional Assessment (CIWARA); Impacts of Climate Variability and Change on Agricultural Systems in Eastern Africa; Projected Impacts of Climate Change Scenarios on the Production of Maize in Southern Africa: An Integrated Assessment Case Study of the Bethlehem District, Central Free State, South Africa; Crop-livestock Intensification in the Face of Climate Change: Exploring Opportunities to Reduce Risk and Increase Resilience In Southern Africa Using an Integrated Multi-Modeling Approach; South Asia: Integrated Assessments of the Impacts of Climate Change on Agriculture: An Overview of AgMIP Regional Research in South Asia; Impact of Climate Change on the Rice-Wheat Cropping System of Pakistan; Integrated Climate Change Assessment through Linking Crop Simulation with Economic Modeling Preliminary Results from the Indo-Gangetic Basin; Integrated Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Maize and Farm Household Incomes in Southern India: a Case Study from Tamil Nadu; Climate Change Impacts on Rice Farming Systems in Northwestern Sri Lanka; Other AgMIP Regions: AgMIP Regional Activities in a Global Framework: The Brazil Experience; AgMIP Regional Activities in a Global Framework: The China Experience; Capacity Building and Outreach: AgMIP Training in Multiple Crop Models and Tools; Conclusion: Major Findings and Future Activities.
